Congratulations to Ricardo Sosa who won a Gold Medal in the interview category at the Academic Decathlon competition on February 4th. He also won an honorary trophy for getting a perfect score in his interview.


Congratulations to the Graphic Design team of Ahmed Khaled, and Maryann Lieu, and one other student who won 2nd place against 6 other schools at the Graphic Design Regional Championships on Friday February 10th. Individually, Maryann Lieu placed 2nd overall. Her design won the t-shirt competition and she placed 3rd in the Theatre logo competition.


Congratulations to (3) CFHS students who placed in the top 10 at the Photography Regional Competition on Friday February 10th. Students competed with over 100 students and 10 schools in a variety of events including Photoshop Challenge, On-Site Photo Shoot, Portfolio Review and Themed Photo.

Congratulations to Meena Venkataraman who was chosen as one of the two Arizona delegates to the US Senate Youth Program! She will attend Washington Week in Washington, D.C. this spring, which is an all-expenses paid trip to Washington to meet some of the highest level elected and appointed federal officials and learn about U.S. government from them. She will also receive a $10,000 scholarship to the college of her choice and will be recognized at the State Board of Education meeting in January.


The Catalina Foothills Speech and Debate Team had a successful run at the Winter Trophy Tournament at Greenway HS in Phx, AZ this past weekend. The team proudly defended its title from last year by bringing home both the 1st place team sweepstakes award for the highest number of points across all teams competing, as well as the annual Pat Connell award, a recognition unique to the Winter Trophy going to the team with the highest number of points earned for individual entries in LD Debate, Congressional Debate, and Extemporaneous speaking. The team also had a number of individual winners.

  • Novice Lincoln Douglas: Elle Muller took 2nd place.
  • Varsity Lincoln Douglas debate: Meena Venkataramanan - 3rd place.
  • Novice Public Forum Debate: Clay Storie and Memi Maruflu - 1st place.
  • Poetry: Meena Venkataramanan - 1st place.
  • Prose: Meena Venkataramanan - 2nd place in Poetry.
  • Impromptu Speaking: Carter Eckel - 4th place.
  • Expository Speaking: Sarah Cho - 4th place, Deven Carmichael - 5th place.

Congratulations, CFHS Speech and Debate team, for your successful participation in the 25th annual Mountain View Speech and Debate Tournament. The team demonstrated its success with several individual medalists, including Mitchell Kaufmann with 6th place and Meena Venkataramanan with 3rd place in Poetry Interpretation, Meena Venkataramanan with 3rd place in Prose Interpretation, Maxim Quint with 3rd place in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Lindsey Hawley and Saul Weintraub with 6th place in Duet Acting. Meena Venkataramanan was also recognized as the 5th highest individual sweepstakes earner at a tournament with almost 800 participants. The team also had a number of octofinalists, semifinalists, and finalists in their respective speech and debate events, including Josh Cohen, Amy Gaudet, Clay Storie, Cipora Cohon, Sammi Swayze, Chloe Wicklund, Sylvia Zarnescu, Haseeb Irfan, and Gabe Cohon. Congrats to all who competed!

Congratulations to the CFHS Speech & Debate Team for earning membership into the National Speech & Debate Association’s prestigious 100 Club . Students earn points and degrees in the NSDA honor society based on competitive and service-related activities. CFHS Speech & Debate is ranked among the top 23% of schools nationwide. The club advisors are Ms.Angela Hill and Ms.Taylor Johnson. Keep up the terrific work and good luck at the Mountain View Tournament next weekend.


Congratulations to the Falcon Band!

The Foothills Falcon Band received an “excellent” rating at the Canyon Del Oro Invitational on October 8th. They won all available caption awards including awards for outstanding musical performance, outstanding general effect, outstanding visual performance, outstanding percussion and outstanding auxiliary!


The Band was also at the U of A Band Day October 15th and was one of only two bands out of over 40 schools to receive the rating of “Superior with Distinction”.

Congratulations to Jillian Hoyt, who has been accepted into a program to travel with the Because We Care Foundation to learn more about the medical field and practice the Spanish language in Quito, Ecuador. Jill will accompany local pediatric orthopedic surgeon Dr. Luis Piedrahita and his team of orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, nurses and 2 other students from the Tucson Area. This team will provide 15-20 knee replacement surgeries for Ecuadorians who are unable to afford the surgery.


Congratulations to Nic Conway, who was named Small Schools Softball Player of the Year! Nic will be honored on June 5, 2016 at the Arizona Sports Awards, hosted by the Arizona Republic.


Congratulations to Sophie Barnard, Parker Kaufmann, Andrew Ryan for being selected to represent CFHS at the 2016 HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) Arizona Seminar in Glendale, AZ this summer.
